Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage is looking for reliable and enthusiastic volunteers to support our projects.ย  At the moment we are recruiting for volunteers with a passion for heritage to supportย Unearthed: Forgotten Histories.ย ย 

This is a perfect opportunity to gain real hands-on experience and participate in the behind-the-scenes work it takes to create our trailblazing projects.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to develop skills across the following areas of work:

Archives administration, access and organisation:ย 

  • Opportunity to develop a working knowledge of archival collections software.
  • Learning about archive conventions and standards.
  • Learning about the preservation of a variety of archival materials including environmental monitoring.
  • Gaining knowledge of accession, selection and providing access to the archive.
  • Cultural sensitivities in the production, accession, selection, and access of materials for the archive.
  • Customer service skills.

Digitisation:

  • Good practice and digitisation skills in archiving.
  • Practical digitisation techniques and use of equipment.
  • Knowledge of metadata standards and audit frameworks.
  • Project planning.
  • Recording and transcribing oral histories.

Digital preservation and archiving:

  • Troubleshooting.
  • Digital preservation principles and concepts.
  • Interpreting archival material for learning and engagement.
  • Knowledge of metadata standards and audit frameworks.
  • Copyright and licensing.
